Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 14, 2011 in Events

Sunday 20th November 2011 was International Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR)

In Partnership with Camden LGBT Forum

For trans people, their friends, families and allies.

This was an occasion to remember, mourn, celebrate trans lives lost to violence or suicide and took the following format

4.30pm-6.30pm – Commemoration through readings, poetry and music

6.30pm-9.00pm - Refreshments & cake in 52 Club Bar

The International Trans Day of Remembrance is an opportunity for trans people, their friends, families and allies to come together in a safe space to reflect on those who have lost their lives through violence or suicide because they are trans. It is a time to remember, mourn and celebrate them and to tell their stories so they are not forgotten.

Participants didn’t have to bring or do anything but, as in previous years, people contributed and participated if they wished. People brought short stories, readings or poetry and some 200 people attended. During the course of the day the names of trans people who had been murdered in the previous year due to their trans status were read out. Horrifically, this increased in 2011 to 221  as reported at TDoR ( plus another person who lost their life making it 222 on the following day).

This event was been set up by Trans groups in partnership with Camden LGBT Forum.

Venue: The 52 Club, Basement, 52 Gower Street, London WC1E 6EB
The venue is accessible via lift at street level.

‘Stamping Your Identity!!’ Stamps are available!

November 10, 2011 in Art, Events, Slideshow home

Stamps made by participants in the workship run by Duncan Hooson as partnership activity with the British Museum are now available! Participants in the workshop – inspired by the current (extended) Grayson Perry exhibition- learnt a technique called scraffitti and the resultant tiles have now been fired in a kiln and are available from the Forum for those who took part

Participants were asked to design a stamp (representing how they identify) and the results are stunning! If you took part in this workshop and would like to collect your stamp please contact the Forum on 020 7388 5720 to arrange a time to collect it!

Shout!

November 10, 2011 in Art, Events

Camden LGBT Forum’s schools film ‘Treading on Eggshells’ was screened at ‘Shout – Birmingham’s festival of queer culture’ on Saturday 12th November.  There was a very positve response from the audience and we were able to flag up the new Teachers pack (complete with lesson plans) which will be available shortly. The festival is well worth going to – and the organisers are doing great things in Birmingham. We hope to give more details shortly. (Treading on Eggshells is the first LGBT anti-bullying film to include the issue of trans bullying as well as homphobic bullying.)
